16.40-16.45         Sluiting]]><![CDATA[Webinar: Market Design for a Meshed Offshore Energy Grid]]>Mon, 12 Apr 2021 13:43:32 GMThttps://baee.eu/news/april-12th-2021Renewable energy scenarios foresee a very large development of offshore wind in the North Sea, probably centered around several hubs that are connected to each other and to the mainland. The default regulation for pricing these hubs is that the onshore price zones are extended into the North Sea according to each country's Exclusive Economic Zone. However, this leads to significant discrepancies between market results and the physics of the system, resulting in flows from high to low price zones or unnecessary curtailment. Creating price zones at sea is more efficient, but if the wind parks are 'overplanted', i.e. their peak generation capacity is larger than the network capacity, this can lead to low revenues for the wind parks. Financial transmission rights and put options are possible solutions. A second benefit of price zones is that they may resolve the legal issue of the regulation of hybrid assets.

This has been translated into forcing the maximum production of variable renewable energy (VRE) ---wind and solar--- into power systems operation. The increasing operational costs to maximize the VRE output became the price to pay in order to lower pollution. However, here we show that it is a misconception that forcing VRE production always lowers pollution. We present some examples illustrating that, apart from increasing costs, forcing VRE production can also increase pollution.

Among these are achieving ambitious renewable energy targets at the lowest cost, reducing CO2-emissions, and promoting technology improvement through learning-by-doing. Using an EU-wide transmission-constrained electricity market model, COMPETES, we address the question of how policies that subsidize renewable energy (e.g., feed-in premia, renewable portfolio standards) versus capacity (e.g., investment subsidies) impact the mix of renewable investments, electricity costs, renewable share, CO2 emissions, the amount of subsidies, and consumer prices in the EU power market in 2030 and how they interact with other policies such as the EU ETS. ​

Board Vacancies 

We have 3 board vacancies, as Danielle Devogelaer, Laurens de Vries and Hamilcar Knops will leave the board after the General Assembly. In addition Machiel Mulder will step back as president but is willing to remain on the board, just as Bert Willems, Ronald Huisman and Michiel de Nooij. 

Hence, we are looking for 3 candidates for the BAEE board. Preferably, one of the candidates likes to work in the field of communication and social media. We encourage in particular members from Belgium and Luxembourg as well as female members to respond. 

After the election of new board members, the new board will decide who is taking over the role of president.

The Benelux Association for Energy Economics (BAEE) and the Department of Economics at the University of Antwerp warmly welcome you to the policy workshop: Flexibility in EU electricity markets. 

The transition from a conventional fossil-fuel dominated electricity market to a low-carbon one with intermittent generation calls for sufficient flexible supply and demand sources to balance the energy system.

This policy workshop will highlight economic fundamentals of flexibility markets, the current regulatory framework and the policy challenges. ​

We can look back at a successful conference with many great speakers and visitors. About 650 delegates from all over the world spoke on a wide variety of subjects within the energy economics field. The central theme of the conference, Transforming Energy Markets, has been discussed in 7 plenary sessions, 6 round tables and 91 concurrent sessions. In addition we offered 3 poster sessions, 3 master classes, 1 doctoral seminar, 2 technical excursions and a varied social programme.

Each presentation featured two discussants, providing valuable feedback, and triggering on-topic discussions. We are already looking forward to next year’s event!
